Discipline Your Kids

It seems that discipline has become such a forbidden topic in society.  People are afraid to talk about it, think about it or do it!  The only problem with this line of thinking is that we are hurting the very ones we are trying to protect.

We, as a society, have become so afraid of hurting our children’s pride and ego, that we give them no direction.  They are lost!  Our quest to raise self-confident children has caused us to miss the mark on competence.  I see it everywhere, from the toddler throwing a tantrum in the candy isle at the grocery store, to the teenager who kills a carload of his friends in an accident.  It is your responsibility and your duty to discipline your children.  Take it seriously and they will be far ahead of the crowd as they enter this stage we just discussed, “The Real World.”  Fail to do it and they will be lost.  One of my biggest regrets, from my childhood, is my parent’s lack of discipline.  Yes, I did get in trouble and sometimes I even got “punished” for my bad behavior.  The only problem is, they never followed through with those punishments and I suffered for it.

I am not talking about severe punishment or being hard on your kids here.  I am talking about a planned attempt and follow through at giving your children guidance and direction.  I am talking about teaching them the proper way to act.  They need to be taught about obligations and responsibilities.  They need to be taught the importance of following through on commitments.  In fact, “wise discipline imparts wisdom; spoiled adolescents embarrass their parents.  Discipline your children; you will be glad you did- they’ll turn out delightful to live with.”xxxi  When they get older, they will be grateful too!
