Episode 2: How To Bring Out The Best In Others

As every successful person understands, achieving one’s own objective is simply not enough. Sooner or later, you realize that there is more to life than just achieving your own objectives. One of life’s greatest challenges and most rewarding responsibilities is to continually encourage others to live up to their potential! Regardless of if you are a business leader, friend, parent or spouse, one of the most important obligations you have is to lift others to new levels of success and help them live to their potential. If done properly, this can be made into a winning situation for all involved.

Grateful Receiving

Many people I speak with are better givers than receivers.  What they don’t realize, though, is that the two go together; that you can’t have one without the other.  There are many reasons that you should allow yourself to receive.  Among them, is the fact that “God has given us two hands; one to receive with and the other to give with.  We are not cisterns made for hoarding; we are channels made for giving.”cxxviii

Accept Generosity and Ask For Help

This often is an overlooked aspect of generosity.  If you live life with a spirit of generosity, then you have the right and obligation to accept generosity from others.

Don’t forget to accept generosity from others. Many times, people who have learned to give have a difficult time with allowing others to do nice things for them. It is perfectly ok to accept someone else’s generosity, as long as you continue to do good for other people.  In fact, it is an obligation, because by accepting someone else’s generosity you are helping them to develop this critical trait.

Being Generous Without Spending a Lot Of Money

A discussion of generosity always comes back to spending money and material things.  So, I am going to discuss those things now.  It is important to note, however, that there are infinitely many ways to be generous and spread good.  We will discuss these in a minute.  “For the love of money is the root of all evil which: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”lxxii   It is what you do with money that determines how God views it. A hundred dollars that is used to feed a poor family has a different value than a hundred dollars used to feed a drug habit. Money simply makes you more of what you already were before you had the money. If, before you had an abundance of money, you were generous, then an abundance of money will make you generous in abundance. If you were greedy, before having an abundance of money, then an abundance of money will make you greedier. Money shows where your heart really is. If you want to find out what type of person you are, then take a look at where you spend your money.

Fulfilling Work

I recently came across a very interesting study.  The research was done to find the level of job satisfaction in various countries.  There were some interesting results; not surprising, but interesting.  In the United States, more than ninety-five percent of all people hated their work.  Even in Japan, where workers once stayed with one company for their entire working life, more than seventy-two percent now claim they are dissatisfied with the work they do.  This is obviously a growing problem, but it doesn’t have to be for you.  You are different.  You have decided to make changes.

So, what is the key to finding satisfaction in your work?  Well, the answer is quite simple.  You need to be doing work you love.  Andrew Carnegie said it best, when he said, “To succeed, you must love what you do.”cxi  Let’s look at why this is true.  If you hate your work, you are probably only doing the minimum to get by.  It may seem like you are working hard, but you are simply going through the motions.  This is not fair to you and it’s not fair to the person you are working for.  “One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.”cxii  Many people who hate their work find it easy to do the things I talked about not doing in the section about honest work.  I also dealt with this when I worked for other people, doing work that wasn’t enjoyable, the lack of enthusiasm during the week, the temptation to “call in sick,” the unhappy faces and the fatigue.  It’s interesting how all of these disappear on the days we get to do the things we enjoy.

Doing work you love takes planning and thought.  As I mentioned earlier, don’t quit your job tomorrow and go out and buy that infomercial plan for making millions overnight just yet.  This is what many people do and that is why most businesses fail.  Some of these are real money-making opportunities, but most of them are scams.  Besides, you are looking for work that you love to do, not to go and make a million dollars overnight.

You need to find work that excites you; something that you are passionate about.  When I was developing this program and somebody asked me about it, I would be able to talk to them for hours about it.  Helping others is just something I feel very strongly about.  In fact, I did it at my church and through other organizations for many years without any type of compensation.  I just loved to do it.  You need to find something that you just love to do.

When you start to discover what you are passionate about and begin to take steps to turn it into an opportunity to make money, you will have more energy, more happiness and more fulfillment.  cxiii   You will give yourself a head start into uncovering and pursuing this critical element of your life.

The truth is, when you find work you love to do and you have enthusiasm, passion and purpose, YOU CAN NOT FAIL!  I see it again and again; people moving out of work they hate, into work they love.  These people transform their lives’ and finances for the positive, sometimes quicker than can even be imagined.

Never Stop Giving

You may hear other people talking about how giving “doesn’t work.”  You may begin to think these thoughts yourself.

You may even reach a point, where you begin to reason that you don’t have to give so much or that you have been giving long enough and deserve something.  If you allow yourself to adopt that pattern of thinking and begin to ease up on your giving, then all of your previous generosity would have been in vain.  Don’t ever stop planting seeds of generosity and giving.  I know from experience that: “The individual is capable of both great compassion and great indifference.  He has it within his means to nourish the former and outgrow the later.”lxix

You Will Harvest What You Plant

This rule of generosity is quite simple, yet many times it seems to be overlooked by most people.  “Do not be

deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.  Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.  Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…”lxiv

Many people don’t believe that the law of sowing and reaping works.  There are those who will mock this truth.  We live in a period where people are so interested in themselves that they refuse to look at the evidence.
